At the beginning of 2014 we wrote about the first part of the 10 most anticipated records of 2014. As we are approaching the end of the year, there are still plenty of record releases we haven’t talked about. Here is DARK DOG’s part 2 of the 10 most anticipated albums of 2014.
‘Channel Orange’ was stuck in our ears throughout and beyond the summer of 2012 and it is about time that one of the most gifted singer-songwriters of today graces us with more proof of his talent. One of the most memorable things about his first albums is the fact that the song ‘Thinkin Bout You’ is about his love then for a man. This statement on his Tumblr caused some uproar in the world of hip-hop and R&B, where views on sexuality are amazingly conservative. DARK DOG loves his bravery! There hasn’t been any official release date for this album announced yet.
Julian Casablancas & The Voidz - Tyranny
The frontman of The Strokes teamed up with The Voidz for ‘Tyranny’, his second solo album. It was released last September and caused somewhat of a controversy. In interviews earlier this year he referred to this album as a “protest record”. The sound described by some as ‘anti-Strokes’. If you’re a Julian Casablancas fan and are up for a musical adventure trip this album is for you. The DARK DOG staff is listening to ‘Human Sadness’ right now.
Nicki Minaj – The Pinkprint
According to the New York Times this lady is “the most influential female rapper of all time”, but Minaj is not only notorious for her distinctive fast flow, but also for bold style choices and her derriere. ‘Anaconda‘ the second single released from this upcoming album The ‘Pinkprint’ is the latest proof. The album title is a reference to Jay-Z’s classic ‘The Blueprint’. Release is scheduled for November 24, 2014.
Prince – Art Official Age & Plectrumelectrum
We couldn’t complete this list without a release of an icon like Prince. It has been a pretty exciting year for Prince. He did a cameo on the comedy series ‘New Girl’, it was the 30-year anniversary of Purple Rain and last September he did not just release one, but two new albums: ‘Art Official Age’ and ‘Plectrumelectrum’ which is a collaboration with his new band 3rdEyeGirl.
Flying Lotus – You’re Dead!
At the beginning of October LA producer and musician Flying Lotus released his 5th album. The unique mix of his trip-hop-infused electronic beats and funky rhythms have gotten a jazz treatment on this album. Among other big names, this album counts with collaborations featuring jazz legend Herbie Hancock and Thundercat. The DARK DOG staff is listening to ‘Never Catch Me‘ right now featuring Kendrick Lamar who by the way is working on a follow-up to 2012′s good kid, m.A.A.d city. Release date to be announced.
