Excitement is building up over the course of today, because later on today the biggest soccer tournament in South American history is kicking off.
12 teams are competing to lift the highly desired trophy.
Since 1916 the Copa America has been played. Formally it was known as the “South American Championship” until the name changed in 1967. Uruguay won the last tournament in 2011 defeating Paraguay in the final. Uruguay by the way is also the country that has won this competition the most times – 15 times in total.
The host Chile will inaugurate the tournament with a game against Ecuador.
Who’s standing out on each side?
On Chile’s side we have Alexis Sánchez and Arturo Vidal that will lead the pack. Some claim that Chile has the best goalkeeper in Claudio Bravo.
Ecuador goes into this tournament plagued by injuries. Key players Antonio Valenia and Felipe Caicedo won’t be able to play. Enner Valencia and Christian Noboa will have to take on more responsibility.
The energy of the tournament is contagious and we can’t wait until kickoff.
May the best team win!
